Virgin & Child with Monkey Engraving by Albrecht Durer, c. 1498
This year’s Artemis Journal features our guest writer, Ron Smith with several poems and today’s post highlights, Virgin & Child with Monkey, in which he used an engraving by Albrecht Durer, c 1498 to inspire his Ekphrastic Poem. (Ekphrastic poetry is a poem inspired by a work of art).
“Torso Umbre” Betty Branch (as seen in 2016 ArtemisJournal)
This post contains our 2016 distinguished guest artist, Betty Branch. Our mission at Artemis is to foster excellence in the arts and literature by presenting distinguished artists and writers, as a forum for many contributors to debut their work.
Artemis is pleased to present the photograph “The Beauty of Simplicity” by William Cates, (published in Artemis 2016) and an essay by Cara Ellen Modisett, “From Interstate 81” (published in Artemis 2014).
Maurice Ferguson, our distinguished Literary Editor has been with Artemis since the early days in the 1980’s, serving on our Board and editing various yearly journals. Here is one of his fine poems, “The House on the Mountain”.
Artemis is pleased to be working with Carilion Clinic’s program of “Poems in the Waiting Rooms”, by providing take home brochures of poetry in their clinic waiting rooms around the region. This is a natural fit for Artemis as we believe in the healing power of art and poetry. Here is a testimony by one of our gifted artists, published in the 2015 and 2016 Artemis, Tricia Scott.
Artemis featured Beth Macy in 2015 Artemis with an essay on the courage of her convictions after the publication of “Factory Man”. She has now released her second novel “Truevine” to rave reviews.
ARTEMIS JOURNAL will be featuring daily the art and poetry from our journals throughout the years. Today’s artist is Linda Atkinson who has been involved with Artemis throughout the years, serving on our Board of Directors in the 1990’s and has been a regular contributor to our journal.
Artemis Journal 2016 is almost sold out due to an enthusiastic response from our readers. We will put in a new print order to fulfill the demand. Order now if you are interested in supporting a small press and owning our latest edition.
“Art is essential. It heals us and keeps what life is all about real. It gives us hope,” said Jeri Rogers at the launch of the new Artemis Journal, the regional literary and art journal that she founded.
Ron Smith, Virginia Poet Laureate & guest writer for Artemis Journal 2016
Rogers – a Floyd resident, professional photographer and editor of Artemis – thanked the Roanoke Arts Commission and the Taubman Museum of Art for their collaboration in hosting the special event, which began with a wine and cheese reception and featured a talk by Virginia Poet Laureate Ron Smith.
Smith –a writer in residence at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond with several published poetry collections – has three poems in the current journal. From the Taubman theater podium, he read those and others and engaged the audience with questions and answers, giving insight into the writing process.
